Police and Criminal Evidence Act (1984) and accompanying Codes of Practice
The Police And Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) and the PACE Codes of Practice provide the core framework of police powers including the interviewing of detainees. Whilst PACE-compliant recorders were originally developed to meet the legal requirements for prosecutions, they are also invaluable in many other situations where a dispute regarding the contents of a conversation may occur such as meetings, interviews, disciplinary hearings, etc.
Dual simultaneous recordings on tamper-proof media allow one copy to be provided to the person being interviewed and a second copy retained for reference or transcription. All PACE-compliant recordings contain a spoken announcement of the time and date in addition to the conversation so there can be no subsequent dispute as to what was said and when. PACE-compliant transcription machines have no erase facility. The volume of the time code is also adjustable for easier transcription.
